Use incremental cost for a replacement decision

If the old system must be replaced anyway, comparing the full price of the new system against zero can be misleading. Enter the additional cost of the higher-efficiency option relative to the baseline replacement. This incremental-cost approach answers the more useful question: whether the extra efficiency premium is likely to be recovered through lower operating cost during the expected ownership period.

Choose the savings percentage carefully

Use contractor modeling, an audit or measured baseline data when possible. Savings depend on climate, equipment sizing, ducts, controls, building envelope and behavior.
