Editorial Policy

Reviewed by WattCostLab Editorial Team

How WattCostLab researches, writes and updates energy-cost content.

Primary-source preference

For quantitative defaults and methodological claims, we prioritize government agencies, national laboratories, standards bodies and original technical documentation, including EIA, NREL and DOE.

Calculator transparency

Where practical, calculators show the core equation and allow users to edit key assumptions. A national reference rate is not presented as the user's actual utility tariff.

Cost guides

Installation-cost guides focus on cost drivers, quote structure, project scope and comparison methods. We avoid presenting a single nationwide contractor price as universally applicable.

Hypothetical examples

Illustrative numbers are labeled as hypothetical and explain a method rather than claim current market pricing.

Commercial separation

Advertising, affiliate relationships and referral partnerships may support the site in the future. Sponsored or paid relationships will be disclosed and will not be presented as independent editorial recommendations.

Updates and corrections

Pages may be revised when primary datasets, tariffs, standards or methodologies change. Material errors should be corrected promptly. See the Corrections Policy.

Innovation & Trends editorial policy

Innovation Briefs are designed to explain emerging home-energy technologies without confusing laboratory performance with commercial availability. WattCostLab prefers primary research papers, national laboratories, government research programs and institutional technical releases. Secondary reporting may help identify a topic but should not be the sole technical basis for a claim.

Each brief assigns a technology-readiness label such as Research, Simulation, Pilot, Field demonstration, Scale-up or Commercializing. These labels are editorial descriptions of the evidence in the cited source; they are not certifications, investment ratings or guarantees of future market success.

Prototype efficiency, temperature differences, cost reductions and other numerical results remain tied to the original test or study conditions. WattCostLab does not automatically convert a research result into a household savings claim.

Sponsored relationships, if any, must be disclosed and do not change readiness labels, calculator formulas or editorial conclusions.
