Pool Pump Electricity Cost Calculator

Estimate the electricity cost of a pool pump from its average operating power and filtration runtime.

What makes the estimate more accurate?

Variable-speed pumps can use very different power at different speeds. If your pump changes speed during the day, use measured daily kWh or calculate each operating stage separately and add the results.

Data note: Electricity prices vary by location and tariff. The default $0.173/kWh is a U.S. residential reference; use your actual utility rate for decision-making. See sources.

Estimate only. Actual energy use depends on equipment, controls, climate and user behavior.

Pool pump kWh: how to calculate daily and monthly use

Convert pump watts to kilowatts, multiply by daily runtime to estimate kWh per day, then multiply by the number of operating days. Use your electricity price per kWh to convert energy use into daily, monthly or seasonal cost.

Variable-speed pool pumps need a runtime-based estimate

A variable-speed pump may operate for more hours at a lower power level. Use the average power at the actual programmed speed rather than assuming the motor runs at full rated power for every hour.

Quick questions

How do I calculate pool pump kWh?

Pump kW multiplied by operating hours gives kWh. For example, use the average electrical input at the selected speed rather than horsepower alone.

Does running a pool pump longer always cost more?

Total cost depends on both runtime and power. A variable-speed pump can sometimes run longer at a much lower power level, so compare total kWh rather than hours alone.
