What actually determines heat pump installation cost
Heat pump projects are difficult to compare from equipment price alone. Total installed cost can include the outdoor unit, indoor air handler or fan coil, refrigerant lines, controls, condensate drainage, electrical work, duct modifications, permits and commissioning.
In an existing home, the most expensive surprises often come from project conditions rather than the heat-pump cabinet itself: inadequate electrical capacity, deteriorated ductwork, difficult equipment access or the need to redesign distribution.
Size the system from building load, not floor area alone
DOE home-upgrade guidance emphasizes assessing the home before major upgrades. A professional home energy assessment can identify air leakage, insulation problems and existing equipment issues that affect heating and cooling loads. Reducing load before replacing HVAC can change the appropriate equipment size.
Square-foot rules can be useful for rough screening but are not a substitute for a proper load calculation when selecting equipment.
